Iraqi jets hit ISIS militants in Diyala

Security Media Cell (SMC) announced on Saturday, January 29, an air strike killed nine Islamic State (ISIS) militants believed to be responsible for the massacre of eleven Iraqi troops earlier this month in al-Azhim, Diyala.

The National Security Agency was able to track down the exact location of a militant group in Hawi al-Azhim within the Diyala Operations Sector, who were the perpetrators of the massacre in Diyala, SMC said in its statement published on Saturday night.
Iraqi Air Force F-16 warplanes carried out three precise strikes which resulted in the deaths of nine militants inside their hideout, according to SMC’s statement.
The attack on January 21 in al-Azim, in Diyala’s al Khalis district was one of the deadliest attacks on Iraqi forces in months. ISIS militants took advantage of foggy weather to attack a barracks in al-Azhim district.
A suspect has been arrested on charges of his alleged involvement with Friday’s missile attack on Baghdad International Airport, a security source told NRT on Saturday, January 29.
The source stated the suspect, Akram al-Qaisi, is under investigation in order to determine who was behind the attack and other perpetrators involved.
Missiles were fired early on Friday morning at Baghdad’s airport and a decommissioned civilian plane was badly damaged.
Security Media Cell said three missiles were discovered in a launch pad in Abu Ghraib district, adding security forces were able to uncover important leads to track down the perpetrators.
Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, as well as Kurdish officials in Erbil condemned the attacks as damaging to Iraq’s reputation.
Kuwait Airways announced on Friday it has suspended flights to Iraq.
