Tehran and Baghdad reach deal over gas export from Iran

Iran is committed to providing Iraq with natural gas and both countries have reached an agreement, Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Adil Karim, said on Thursday, April 28.

Karim told Iraqi News Agency Tehran has agreed to renew exporting natural gas to Iraq to run the country’s power plants.

Karim departed for Iran on Wednesday at the head of a high-ranking ministerial delegation to discuss the issue of gas imports into Iraq.

The minister said Baghdad owes payments to Iran and has agreed to fulfil them. Tehran will provide gas and electricity in return.

The electricity ministry stated Iran’s reduction of gas supplies had caused 3,400 megawatts in power loss, according to Reuters.
