Barham Salih likely to be nominated for Iraqi presidency post, official tells Kurdpress

A leading member of the Coalition for Justice and Democracy, Hasan Jahad, did not deny the possibility of the coalition’s leader Barham Salih as a candidate for the Iraqi presidency post which the Iraqi constitution has dedicated it to a Kurd.

A former leading member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Barham Salih held a meeting on Friday, September 14, with a number of PUK officials including Kosrat Rasul; the meeting was highly criticized by a large number of the coalition’s supporters.

Jahad told Kurdpress that the meeting was within efforts among political parties in Kurdistan Region in order to achieve unity in dealing with Baghdad.

He stated that the two sides discussed the latest developments in the region and in Iraq as Baghdad is seeking to form a new government.

The official, however, refuted the meeting discussed Salih’s effort to become a nominee for Iraqi presidential post though the New York Times and al-Hayat Daily have speculated Salih to be the main candidate of the Kurds for the post and it shows that Salih is a capable politician for the post.

Jahad, however, refuted the meeting discussed Salih’s candidacy for the post.
