Turkey’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that near the Syrian border one of its military posts was targeted by an attack with a rocket launcher.
The Ministry also said that the attack killed one Turkish soldier and wounded another.
It did not identify the militants but said, after the attack on the post at Suruc, in Sanliurfa province, Turkish forces retaliated.
“Targets were identified in the area and immediately fired upon, with 12 terrorists neutralized according to initial information,” the statement said. Turkey uses “neutralized” for its eliminated targets usually meaning killed.
The operations were continuing in the area, according to the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
Turkish forces are engaged in frequent conflict in that region with the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) Group. Ankara considers YPG a terrorist group, which is a key part of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
