Iranian president to visit Syria, Turkey amid talks of normalization

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi is slated to visit Turkey as well as Syria following an invitation from both countries, a foreign ministry spokesperson has said on Monday, adding that the plans are being finalized.

In a weekly press conference in Tehran, spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said the plans for Raise’s first visit to Turkey since taking the office two years ago are currently “being finalized.”

It comes after Turkish presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin was quoted as saying last week that the Iranian president will visit Ankara “in the next few weeks.”

“The dialogue between Iranian and Syrian authorities is held at the highest level, we have excellent relations. There was a conversation between the foreign ministers of the two countries last night,” Kanaani said, Iranian state-run IRNA reported.

The announcement comes at a time when official statements have increased, especially from the Turkish side about the possibility of normalization between Damascus and Ankara.

It is believed that the visits of the Iranian president’s to Syria and Turkey is an indication that he will discuss the issue of Ankara-Damascus normalization with both sides.

The spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that his country stresses on preserving the unity of the Syrian territory which also was emphasized by his Syrian counterpart.

In the same context, Ayman Susan, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, began an official visit to Tehran on Monday following a phone call between the Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad and his Iranian counterpart a day earlier.
