PUK delays meeting to decide nominees for speaker, ministers: spokesman

<p style="text-align: left;">The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leadership council has delayed the meeting where it was expected to select its nominee for parliamentary speaker and draw up a list of officials for the ministries that it will run in the new government, according to party spokesperson Latif Sheikh Omar.

Sheikh Omar told NRT on Thursday, March 7, that the party had narrowed its choice for speaker down to either Rewaz Fayaq or Begard Talabani, but that it would not make a final decision on Friday.

It was not immediately known when the meeting would take place.

A source in the PUK leadership told NRT Digital Media that the party would pick ministerial candidates after further talks with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

&ldquo; We will make another agreement with the Kurdistan Democratic Party about the distribution of the positions,&rdquo; the PUK leadership council member said.

The KDP and the PUK signed an agreement March 4 that paves the way for the new government to be finalized.

The agreement is designed to be in force for the next four years. The parties developed an 18-point agreement early last month. The document signed today is supplementary to that.

The parties said that a committee would be formed to oversee implementation of the deal.
