The Change Movement (Gorran) politician said on his official Facebook account that traders involved in the scheme reportedly bribed officials at the Ministry of Natural Resources to file fraudulent paperwork in order to obscure that they were importing substandard fuel into the Kurdistan Region.
“Two officials at the Ministry of Natural Resources have been arrested. I witnessed the case and other officials who were named should also be investigated,” he added.
“A trader was released on bail after being detained for fourteen days.”
According to NRT Muhammad also claimed that the case will be transferred to the court in Erbil for trial.
The ministry has not yet commented on the matter.
“I hope the court decides impartially and far from partisan thought and keeps its independence… [I hope] other government officials will not intervene,” he said.
Thousands of tankers carrying fuel and other oil products are enter the Kurdistan Region via international border crossings. The authorities monitor quality and substandard fuel is supposed to be turned away.
