Masrour Barzani denounces PKK attack on Peshmerga in Dohuk

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday, December 14, strongly condemned the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’ (PKK) attack on Peshmerga forces in Duhok governorate a day earlier.

“Three security personnel have now been martyred at the hands of the PKK in recent months,” Barzani said during a phone call with US Special Envoy for Syria Joel Rayburn, according to a statement released by the KRG.

On Sunday, a member of the Roj Peshmerga affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party's (KDP) Zeravani forces was killed in Duhok governorate’s Amedi district during a clash with the People’s Defense Forces (HPG), the armed wing of the PKK.

One Peshmerga was killed and several others wounded in a clash with the PKK on November 4.

“PKK’s behavior, including efforts to exploit peaceful protests, threatens regional stability,” Barzani added.

Barzani and Rayburn also discussed recent developments in Syria and both agreed on the importance of peace talks between the Kurdish factions in a way that “promotes pluralism, power-sharing and political freedoms.”

They also agreed that Islamic State (ISIS) remains a shared threat.
