Pompeo called for the creation of a buffer zone in the Kurdish regions of Syria

World Service - Mike Pompeo, the former US Secretary of State, emphasized the need for Washington's immediate action in Syria, proposed the creation of a buffer zone between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the forces of the interim government, and called for a limited US military presence, the return of severe oil sanctions, and the development of a security framework to prevent the revival of ISIS.

According to Kordpress, the former Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, in a note published in the Washington Post newspaper, called for immediate action by the United States regarding the developments in Syria and proposed the creation of a "buffer zone" in the Kurdish regions of the country.

In this note, Pompeo emphasizes that Washington should prevent the escalation of conflicts in the north and northeast of Syria by supporting the creation of a buffer line between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the forces of the Syrian Interim Government. According to him, this buffer zone can be guaranteed by the limited but targeted presence of American forces in order to create the necessary deterrence and prevent the collapse of security in the areas controlled by the Kurds.

The former US Secretary of State has also called for a quick and decisive return of strict sanctions against financial networks linked to the Syrian oil sector and the leaders of the Damascus-affiliated militias. He believes that reducing or suspending sanctions without security and political guarantees will only strengthen armed actors and lead to more instability.

In another part of this note, Pompeo emphasized the necessity of a broad diplomatic initiative to create a new security framework in Syria; A framework that he said should protect local communities, especially Kurds and other minorities, while preventing the return and revival of ISIS.

He warns that the security vacuum in the Kurdish regions and the reduction of the deterrence role of America can once again provide the ground for the activities of ISIS cells and the intensification of sectarian violence in Syria; An issue whose consequences will be beyond the borders of this country.
