Increasing the seats of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in the Iraqi Parliament

According to Kurdpress, after taking the oath as a member of the parliament, Badr Mahmoud withdrew from the parliamentary activity and resumed his work as the governor of Salah al-Din. Following this action, Karim Shakur, who won the second vote of the "Al-Jamahir al-Wataniyya" coalition in Salah al-Din province, has qualified to enter the Iraqi parliament.

According to the Khandan news website, Karim Shakur announced in an interview that he is currently in Baghdad and is waiting for the upcoming parliament session to take the legal oath as a representative. He emphasized that if Badr Mahmoud's withdrawal from the parliament is certain, he will enter the parliament as the only alternative representative of this coalition.

Meanwhile, some Iraqi media have reported that the process of Badr Mahmoud's return to the position of Salah al-Din governor was accompanied by legal ambiguities. According to these reports, he previously handed over the powers of the governorship to his first deputy by issuing an administrative decree and was sworn in as a member of parliament at the beginning of this month, but yesterday he resumed his activities as a governor by issuing a new decree. An action that is considered to be doubtful from a legal point of view.

With the finalization of Badr Mahmoud's resignation from the parliament, Karim Shakur will enter the parliament as a representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and thus, the number of seats of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in the Iraqi Parliament will increase to 19 seats.

The elections of the sixth term of the Iraqi Parliament were held on November 11, 2025, and according to the results, the Patriotic Union won more than half a million votes and the Kurdistan Democratic Party more than one million votes. The Patriotic Union had won 18 seats in this election, and with the addition of this new seat, the number of its representatives will increase.
