Stop the siege of Syrian Kurds

World Service - A group of intellectuals, university professors and well-known activists have warned against what they called "serious danger to the democratic experience of Rojava" and asked the democratic governments to recognize the autonomous administration of northern and eastern Syria, condemn the attacks on the Kurdish areas and take immediate action to guarantee the political and security rights of the Kurds.

According to Kurdpress, a group of world-renowned intellectuals, academics and activists issued a joint statement, calling for immediate support for the "Rojava Democratic Experience" in the north and east of Syria and warned that this political and social project is facing a serious risk.

In this statement entitled "Defend Rojava: We stand by the democratic revolution of northeastern Syria", it is emphasized that the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and Eastern Syria has built a model based on democratic confederalism, women's leadership, minority rights, labor cooperatives and environmental values over the past 14 years and has provided a unique example of multi-ethnic coexistence in the context of the Syrian war.

The signatories have warned that after talks between the Syrian Transitional Government and the Autonomous Administration broke down late last year, the Syrian army's attacks on the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo began on January 6, displacing at least 150,000 civilians and causing widespread casualties. According to them, the subsequent advances in northeastern Syria were accompanied by the support of Turkish drones and allied forces, and resulted in cases such as killings, forced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, sexual violence, and the siege of Kobani. In this context, the January 30 ceasefire agreement between the autonomous administration and Damascus has put the future of the autonomous administration structures in a fragile state.

The statement also criticizes the approach of Western governments, considers diplomatic and financial support from Damascus as a factor in weakening Rojava's position, and describes the issue as part of a broader battle over democratic alternatives in the era of growing authoritarianism and environmental crises. In the end, it is emphasized: "If we do not stand by them today, history will not forget our silence.

The signatories have asked democratic governments and international institutions to recognize the democratic autonomous administration of northern and eastern Syria, condemn the attacks on northeastern Syria, insist on recognizing the identity and rights of Kurdish self-government in the future constitution of Syria, and pressure Turkey to end the siege of Kobani.
