According to Kurdpress, three informed sources have told AFP that the US forces, which led the anti-ISIS coalition, will be completely withdrawn from Syria within the next month; The process that has entered the implementation phase with the beginning of the evacuation of one of the main bases in the northeast of this country.
According to the AFP report from Qamishlo, convoys consisting of dozens of trucks carrying armored vehicles and prefabricated structures moved from the Qasrek base in Haskeh province to the Iraqi border on Monday. A Syrian government official has announced that "within a month, the American military presence in the bases will end completely." A Kurdish source also confirmed this timeline. The aforementioned sources requested to remain anonymous due to not having official permission to comment on this matter.
According to a diplomat from a country allied with both sides, the withdrawal process is likely to be completed in about 20 days. However, the US may still conduct airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria from other regional bases.
The United States currently has about 1,000 troops in Syria. Washington entered Syria in 2014 to confront the "Islamic State" (ISIS) group; A group that had occupied large parts of Syria and Iraq at that time. Although ISIS lost control over parts of Syria in 2019, secret cells are still active in different areas. On Saturday, this group called its supporters to confront the Syrian government.
At the same time as the departure of the American forces, Syrian state media reported that in an attack attributed to ISIS on a checkpoint in the city of Raqqa, four internal security forces were killed and the attacker also died.
These developments occur in a situation where the Syrian government has expanded its control over the northeast of the country, which was previously under the administration of Kurdish forces allied to the United States. Last month, these forces agreed with Damascus to integrate their institutions into the central government structure, and Syria also officially joined the international coalition against ISIS.
During the past two weeks, American forces had withdrawn from two other bases, al-Tanf in the southeast and al-Shadadi in the northeast. According to a Kurdish source, in the next three to five weeks, logistics equipment, radar systems, missiles and other military equipment will be transferred from the two remaining bases, Qasrek and Kharab Aljir.
The Levant 24 newspaper has claimed that the US has also left the ruined base in Algiers and that the Syrian Democratic Forces under the command of Mazloum Kobani have been stationed in this base last night.
Following the deployment of Syrian government forces in the northeast, the US military has announced that it has transferred thousands of ISIS-affiliated suspects who were kept in prisons managed by Kurdish forces to Iraq. Also, the Syrian authorities announced that the remaining families in al-Hol camp - the largest place of residence for the relatives of ISIS suspects - have been moved to another place in the north of the country.
However, international monitors have warned that after control of al-Hol camp was transferred to the Syrian government on January 20, many residents have left the camp in a "disruptive and unplanned" fashion, and thousands of women and children, often never charged with a crime, remain unaccounted for.
