US claims about efforts to improve economic relations between Erbil and Baghdad

World service – Tom Barak, the US special envoy for Iraq and Syria, announced Washington's efforts to reduce economic tensions between Erbil and Baghdad and lift trade restrictions imposed on the Kurdistan Regional Government. This move comes amid escalating financial and customs disputes the two sides.

According to Kurdpress, citing the New Region Tom, US Special Envoy for Iraq Barak announced that Washington is working with the leaders of the Kurdistan Region to reduce the effects of economic restrictions imposed by the central Iraqi Government on the Region; a move that is seen as part of US effects to reduce tensions between Erbil and Baghdad.

Speaking at a specialized meeting, Barak emphasized that the main problem in Iraq's economic structure is not the Kurdistan Region, but the way in which resources and revenues are managed at the federal Government level.

Disputes between Iraqi Government the Kurdistan Regional Government over the implementation of international customs system have intensified in recent months.

The American envoy also announced Washington's cooperation with the Region's main political families, including the Barzanis and the Talibans, to reduce economic pressures, emphasizing that this situation has caused the region to lack sufficient control over its financial resources and economic security.
