The Turkish defense ministry said in a statement on Sunday that infantry specialist sergeant Mumin Carkaci was killed in an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device on Saturday, Esta Media Network reported.
In a separate statement on Saturday, the defense ministry said another soldier succumbed to his injuries on April 30 after he was wounded during the operation against the PKK in the Kurdistan Region’s province of Duhok on April 19.
On April 26, three Turkish soldiers and two others were wounded in a PKK rocket attack on a military unit in Duhok, according to the Turkish defense ministry.
Turkey launched a cross-border operation against the PKK in several areas in Duhok on April 18.
Turkish warplanes, helicopters and drones were part of the air and land operation in the Kurdistan Region against PKK facilities ranging from camps to ammunition stores.
The military action was part of a long-running Turkish campaign in Iraq and Syria against PKK fighters and the People’s Protection Units (YPG), both regarded as terrorist groups by Ankara.
Turkey regularly launches airstrikes into the Kurdistan Region and has sent commandos to support its offensives.
