Pompeo, Nechirvan Barzani discuss Iraq presidency post on phone

<p style="text-align: left;">The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani discussed the election of the new Iraqi president with the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on phone.

According to the media affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the two officials traded views on the formation of the Iraqi government and the next Iraqi president who will be a Kurd.

During the phone talk the officials also discussed Iraq political developments the ties between the U.S., Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

The U.S. top foreign official has reiterated on the active and effective role of the Kurdistan Region in the formation of the new Iraqi government.

The phone talks comes at a time that Barzani is in Baghdad and met some Iraqi officials over the election of the next Iraqi president; an issue that has been turned into a tension between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) which says the post belongs to the party.
