According to NRT a KDP delegation led by Nechirvan Barzani met with the PUK’s Bafel Talabani and other officials.
The two parties have not come to an agreement over who to nominate as a joint candidate between Barham Salih and Fuad Hussein, said the report.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Sunday, September 30, appealed to members of the Iraqi parliament and asked them to vote for Barham Salih, the party’s candidate for the Iraqi presidency.
"It is well known that Iraq is going through a pivotal phase that requires unifying efforts to overcome the obstacles that hinder the political process and democracy and to move forward towards a harmonious national political process that accommodates all positive forces and aims to consolidate democracy and achieve justice and well-being for the Iraqi people," the statement read.
It added that "the Union is known for its moderate national approach and its positive handling of the overall situation in Iraq within the framework of a national equation that preserves all rights without marginalizing any party. Our keenness to continue the policy established by His Excellency Mam Jalal, led us to nominate Barham Salih because of his moderation, efficiency, and national acceptability in the Iraqi street, which qualifies him to take over the presidency of the Republic of Iraq."
The statement called on the members of the Council of Representatives to "vote for Barham Salih as the sole candidate for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan within the framework of the national space and under the dome of the Iraqi Council of Representatives," noting that "the President represents the spectrum of the Iraqi people and not just a component, a sect, or a specific party.”
