Muqtada Sadr says movement won't retreat from resignation

The leader of the Sadrist Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, said on Wednesday, June 15, the MPs from the bloc would not go back on their resignation from parliament, following their withdrawal from the political process on Sunday, according to Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Sadr announced from a meeting in Hanana, Najaf, that they had taken the step to resign following the failure to form a government as a sacrifice for the sake of the homeland and assured there would be no retreat from the move.
He also stated during the meeting with the Sadrist bloc on Thursday that he would not participate in the next elections in the presence of "corrupt politicians, INA stated.
The prominent Shia cleric asked the MPs from his movement, the largest bloc in parliament, to resign from parliament last week and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi received and signed their resignation forms.
The Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Shakhawan Abdullah, on Monday said the Sadrist Movement would take the opposition party to the streets with the public, predicting protests, while the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, expressed concern over the political changes in Baghdad.
The Iraqi parliament has still not managed to form a government since elections in October 2021 and has been unable to elect a president of the republic after failing to reach quorum due to an insufficient number of MPs present.
