PKK has not fully retreated from Shingal: Turkish PM

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim on Saturday, March 31, said the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters have not completely retreated from Shingal region near the northern border of Iraq.

Yildirim encouraged the Iraqi government to oust PKK from Shingal, threatening that the region will be Turkey’s next targets following Ankara's offensive on the northern Syrian city of Afrin, NAT reported.

Turkey can help and launch an attack similar to the one in Afrin to clear Shingal of PKK if Baghdad could not do that so, said Yildirim.

PKK has partially retreated from Shingal and this is a means that Ankara’s task has not come to an end yet, he added.

Earlier on March 29, U.S. State Department said Turkey needs to coordinate with the government of Iraq for any operation in Shingal.

“Sinjar (Shingal) and the United States expect that any operations in Iraq would be done with the approval of the Iraqi Government,” said State Department’s Spokesperson, Heather Nauert.

“So if Turkey is coming into Sinjar, they need to coordinate that with the Government of Iraq.”
