Poland sends aid to Kurdistan Region

The Polish Foreign Ministry has sent another transport of aid to Iraqi Kurdistan, which has been hit hard by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic and under threat from the so-called Islamic State, the ministry announced.

The semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region has suffered from an economic crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of falling oil prices. Adding to the region’s problem is the presence of militants from the so-called Islamic State, Polandin reported.

“Today we are sending yet another aid transport to Iraq due to the huge needs caused by the coronavirus pandemic and war with the so-called Islamic State,” Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski was quoted as saying in his ministry's press release.

“We want to support medical services in offering the necessary aid to Iraqi Kurdistan's inhabitants,” Mr Jablonski added.

The aid was organized in collaboration between Poland's foreign and defense ministries, and support from the state-run Material Reserves Agency, which has donated blankets, surgical gowns, towels and bed sheets.
