Minister says good understanding reached between Peshmerga and Iraqi army

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Peshmerga Affairs Shorsh Esmail said on Thursday, May 13, that the Peshmerga and the Iraqi Security Forces have reached a "good understanding" on how to combat militants operating in the disputed areas.

Esmail made the remarks during a visit to the Bashik and Mosul-Khazr Peshmerga axes on the first day of Eid al-Fitr and stated that the understanding with the federal Ministry of Defense is “valuable”, hoping to reach a comprehensive and concrete agreement, which will ensure the security and stability of the region and the complete elimination of terrorists.
He said that he hopes the Eid will bring more stability and gains to the Kurdistan Region, NRT reported.
“We emphasis that with unity and solidarity, we will protect our Kurdistan together,” he added.
On Tuesday night, Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked Peshmerga unit near Naijul town in Kifri district, killing one Peshmerga and wounding another.
On May 1, three Peshmerga were killed in an ISIS attack in Kirkuk.
Recently officials in both Erbil and Baghdad have expressed concern about the security vacuum in the disputed areas, which allows ISIS to stage attacks against both civilian and military targets.
