Turkey nearing completion of wall on border with Iran: defense minister

Turkey is nearing completion on the construction of a wall along its Iranian border as part of an effort to stop the illegal entry of migrants, Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said on Sunday.

Nearly 150 kilometres of trenches have been dug for the modular wall, which is mostly complete, T24 cited Akar as saying during an on-site inspection of the structure.
Moreover, Turkey has made “additional reinforcements’’ to border outposts and base areas,” the country’s top defence official added.
Turkey is faced with an increasing wave of Afghan nationals attempting to migrate to Turkey through Iran amid advance by the Taliban, which on Sunday entered capital Kabul.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday urged an international effort to bring stability to the war-battered country as the jihadist organisaion threats to take full control of the country.
“We will intensify our efforts and reinforce the understanding that our borders are impassable,” Akar said while denying reports of a mass increase in the number of irregular Afghan migrants entering the country.
Up to 1,000 Afghans are entering Turkey illegally via the eastern borders every day as tens of thousands look for a way to escape Taliban’s increasing hold over the country, Hurriyet newspaper reported last month.
Turkey is already home to some 4 million refugees, including anywhere between 200,000 and 600,000 Afghans, according to the Economist.
