Nechirvan Barzani says Kurdistan Region adheres to the principles of freedom of expression and peaceful coexistence

During a joint press conference with the EU foreign policy chief, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, stressed the region's commitment to maintaining the principles of freedom of expression and peaceful religious and ethnic coexistence in the region.

According to Kurdistan 24 TV, Nechirvan Barzani, met on Tuesday, September 7, with Josep Borrell, the EU foreign policy chief, who visited Erbil.

During a joint news conference with Borrell, Barzani described the US official's visit to the region as a sign of the EU's commitment to the region and Iraq, and said that he would discuss security and stability in EU-Iraq relations, Erbil-Baghdad relations and immigration with Borrell.

While appreciating European assistance to the region and Iraq, especially in the field of human development, Barzani said that the region and Iraq are also exposed to the effects of climate change, and that the three provinces of the Kurdish region are committed to the European Convention on Climate Change and they receive energy and climate adaptation programs support from the European Union.

Barzani called on Europe to support the process of strengthening government institutions, reforms, the rule of law and the empowerment of women and youth in the region and the expansion of bilateral academic, scientific and judicial cooperation with Europe.

He also stressed that the Kurdistan Region wants to benefit from all aspects of relations between Iraq and the European Union.

Addressing Borrell, the head of the Kurdistan Region said that the region reaffirms its commitment to common principles and values, including democracy, freedom of expression, respect for human rights, and peaceful religious and ethnic coexistence.
