On the other hand, a source in the Iraqi parliament announced that, although according to the working schedule of the parliament session, the special parliament session for the election of the president was supposed to be held today, Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at 11 am, but it was decided to postpone the session to next Sunday, February 1, 2026. One of the reasons for postponing the meeting is to give the Patriotic Union and the Democratic Party an opportunity to agree on a common candidate. So far, the head of the parliament has not officially approved the postponement of the meeting.
The post of the president of Iraq belongs to the Kurds, and so far the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan have not reached an agreement on a common candidate. Nizar Omidi Patriotic Union and Democratic Party have also nominated Fawad Hossein for this post.
According to the constitutional deadline set for the Iraqi parliament, the president of Iraq must be elected by the 28th of this month, after the Iraqi parliament held its first session on December 29, 2025 and elected the presidency within two days.
