Barzani's secret meeting with Bafel and Qabad Talabani; The deadlock between the presidency and the formation of the government continues

Iraq and Kurdistan Region Service - Media sources report the secret talks between the leaders of the two Kurdistan Democratic Parties and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan about the Iraqi presidency and the formation of the new cabinet; Talks whose official .results have not been announced

According to Kurdpress, knowledgeable sources announced the holding of a secret meeting between Massoud Barzani, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Bafel Talabani, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and Qabad Talabani in Pirmam region. The meeting, the main focus of which was the discussion about the formation of the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government, as well as the determination of the post of the president of Iraq.

According to media sources, this meeting was held on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, away from the eyes of the media, and at the invitation of Masoud Barzani, Bafel and Qubad Talabani went to Pirmam to discuss the political differences between the two main parties of the region.

Two separate sources have informed the media that the calls to hold this meeting were made by the political office of the Democratic Party and the talks were focused on two main areas: First, the process of forming the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government after more than a year of the parliamentary elections, and secondly, the deep differences over the post of Iraqi president, which is still the place of serious competition between the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union.

According to confirmed information, this meeting was held while the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections were held in October 2024, but the political parties have not yet been able to reach an agreement on the composition of the new cabinet. The dispute over political participation and especially the issue of the presidency of Iraq has brought the process of government formation to a dead end.

Until the moment of writing this report, no official or unofficial information has been published about the two sides reaching a final agreement, and it is not clear whether this confidential meeting has been able to provide a basis for resolving the differences or not.

In this connection, the Iraqi website "Al-Alam Al-Jadeed" also claimed in a report that a high-level meeting between Kurdish parties in the Kurdistan Region, which was held with the mediation of the United States and aimed at breaking the deadlock in the election of the Iraqi president, ended without results.

According to "Al-Alam Al-Jadeed" and quoting informed sources, this meeting was held on the evening of Thursday, February 5, 2026, away from the media hype, under the direct supervision of Washington, but the talks failed without reaching an agreement on the final candidate for the Iraqi presidential post.

These sources have warned that following the failure of this meeting, there is a possibility of postponing the next session of the Iraqi House of Representatives or turning it into a scene of intense political confrontation between different currents over the votes of the representatives. According to these sources, the continuation of the internal differences of the Kurds shows that the political crisis in the Kurdistan region has entered a deeper and more complicated stage after the parliamentary elections for about a year and four months.

Earlier, a high-ranking delegation from the Iraqi coordination framework visited the Kurdistan region, met separately with the leaders of the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union and set a 48-hour deadline for the final answer of the two parties regarding the agreement on the presidency. A deadline that has not yet led to a specific result.

In general, the recent developments show that both at the level of the Kurdistan region and in Baghdad, the political deadlock over the formation of the new regional government and the election of the Iraqi president still exists, and the domestic and international efforts to solve this crisis have not yet come to fruition.
