According to Kordpress, the official website of the European Parliament announced that by passing a resolution on the situation in northeastern Syria, the representatives of this body strongly condemned all forms of violence against civilians and warned that some reported actions could be examples of serious violations of international humanitarian law and even war crimes.
In this resolution, which was approved with 363 votes in favor, 71 votes against, and 81 abstentions, the representatives of the European Parliament expressed deep concern about cases such as extrajudicial executions, forced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, forced migration, and attacks on civilian infrastructure, citing the reports of the United Nations and non-governmental organizations. In particular, cases of violations against the Kurdish population, including desecration of corpses, destruction of cemeteries, and the use of unguided munitions in residential areas have been mentioned.
While welcoming the recent agreement between the "Syrian Democratic Forces" and the Syrian Transitional Government, the European Parliament declared its firm support for the ceasefire and emphasized the need for all parties to adhere to its provisions. Delegates also called on regional actors, including Türkiye, to refrain from any military action or support for armed groups that would undermine the ceasefire.
In this statement, the necessity of protecting Syria's ethnic and religious diversity is emphasized and Damascus authorities are asked to guarantee the fundamental rights of all communities, including Arabs, Kurds, Sunnis, Shiites, Alawites, Christians, Druzes and Yazidis. The European Parliament has stated that the full recognition of the civil, educational and political rights of the Kurdish community is a basic condition for the realization of stability and comprehensive political transition in Syria, and these guarantees should be included in the new constitution of this country.
The representatives also warned about the danger of reviving ISIS and declared that the escape of some elements of this group from the detention centers and camps in northeastern Syria is a serious threat. Expressing regret over the decision of the United States to withdraw its forces from Syria and Iraq, they asked the European Union and its member states to intensify their efforts to prevent the return of ISIS.
Meanwhile, the European Parliament has called on EU member states to return their citizens, especially children, from al-Hol and al-Ruj camps and to prosecute adults within the framework of fair trials.
The European Parliament has emphasized that any future engagement with the Syrian government must be conditional on verifiable progress in the protection of civilians, compliance with the ceasefire, respect for human rights and guaranteeing the rights of minorities.
