The Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTFOIR) said that it would remain committed to create conditions ISIS cannot re-emerge in north-eastern Syria.
The CJTFOIR statement arrives as Turkey plans to carry out a military operation into north-eastern Syria targeting Kurdish forces. The country is amassing military build-up on its border with the war-battered country amid tension with both Russia and the United States over their ties to the Kurdish-led forces in the region known as the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the military wing of the SDF.
Turkey considers the SDF as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) guerrillas that it has been battling in Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan since 1984.
“We remain resolute to supporting the SDF efforts to maintain security & stability so that local communities can rebuild & flourish,” CJTFOIR tweeted, Ahval reported.
Formed in October 2014 by U.S. Central Command, CJTF-OIR is a multinational military coalition against ISIS. It carries out military operations in Iraq, Syria, and Libya and has also provided significant support to the SDF with which it coordinates various operations.
