Anthony Blinken urges Iraqi PM Kadhimi to work with Erbil against 'extremists'

A day after the Monday deadly rocket attack on Erbil, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke by phone with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Tuesday, February 16, and urged him to work closely with the Kurdistan Region to address violent extremists in the country.

At least three rockets hit locations on the north side of Erbil city on Monday evening, which killed one person and wounded nine others, including three civilians in the city.

During the call, the two discussed efforts to identify and hold accountable the groups responsible for the attack, as well as the Iraqi government’s responsibility and commitment to protecting US and Coalition personnel.

Blinken expressed his “outrage at the multiple rocket attacks” on Erbil, referring to a previous attack on September 30, and extended his condolences to the victims and their families, Ahval reported.

He also briefed Kadhimi on his earlier call with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

Separately, the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, the UK and the US released a joint statement on Tuesday night condemning the attack in “the strongest terms” and expressing their countries’ support for the Iraqi government in its investigation of the attack.

“We are united in our view that attacks on US and Coalition personnel and facilities will not be tolerated,” read the statement.
