Protests will continue in Kurdistan region: researcher

<p dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">A researcher at the International Peace Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, has warned that the issues for which the Iraqi Kurds have protested have not been resolved and that the current protests may continue.

In the past few days, protesters in Kurdistan Region have intensified their protests in the cities of Sulaimani province, setting fire to the offices of the ruling parties in the cities. Several protesters were killed and wounded during the attack by security forces.

Shiwan Fazel, a researcher on Kurdish issues at the Swedish Peace Institute, warned that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has been unable to pay its employees due to falling oil prices, the spread of the corona virus and the lack of funding from the central government and the situation has provoked protests from employees and others.

He told Al Jazeera that the KRG is also unable to fulfill its obligations to the citizens of the region. The Kurds, who have been protesting against the ruling parties since 2011, continue to see the government being indifferent to their demands, so protests are likely to continue.

Shiwan Fazel stressed that the people want to eradicate economic corruption and they demand transparency in government operations and accountability to the people.
