According to Kurdpress, Kurdistan Regional President Nechirvan Barzani announced that despite holding two "very good" meetings in the recent period between Massoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, and Bafel Talabani, the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, no final agreement has been reached so far. However, he emphasized that "both parties are on the right track to reach an agreement."
Nechirvan Barzani said today (Sunday, February 15, 2026) on the sidelines of the press conference at the Munich Security Conference: "All countries want a strong Kurdistan region within the framework of federal Iraq, and we are the main factor of stability in the region."
Regarding the meetings between the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union, he added: "In the past few days, Masoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani had two important and very good meetings; However, they have not reached an agreement until this moment, but these meetings were a very positive beginning."
In another part of his speech, the head of the Kurdistan Region said about the formation of the Iraqi government: "We will do everything we can to form the Iraqi government."
He also explained about the process related to Türkiye and Turkish Kurdistan: "This case is very serious; Although its process has stopped to some extent, it is positive and PKK must respond to Abdullah Ocalan's demands.
Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections were held on October 20, 2024, but so far the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union have not reached a final agreement. At the level of Iraq, there is still a difference over the prime ministerial candidate; Especially after America officially rejected Nouri al-Maliki's candidacy.
