According to Kurdpress, Iraqi Justice Minister Khalid Shawani announced that his country hosts more than 5,700 ISIS prisoners who were recently transferred from Syria.
According to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, referring to the unprecedented pressure on the Iraqi judicial system, he emphasized: the prisons where these people are kept are impenetrable and the security measures are designed in such a way that the possibility of any escape, force smuggling or internal rebellion in them has reached zero.
The Minister of Justice of Iraq emphasized: If countries request the return of terrorists related to them, but these elements were among those who were involved in crimes against the Iraqi people, they will never be extradited and will be tried and imprisoned on Iraqi soil.
He added: For other prisoners, talks are ongoing with the international coalition to return them to their countries in order to prevent prisons from becoming a place and school for the production of extremism.
Referring to the mass transfer of 5,704 prisoners from the prisons under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to Iraq, Shawani said: We had previously succeeded in reducing the population density in prisons from 300% to 25%, but the sudden arrival of this amount of dangerous terrorists once again created severe pressure.
In other parts of this interview, he emphasized: All transferred prisoners are kept in a single and very strong center, which is under continuous security and intelligence surveillance.
Pointing out that the huge costs of maintenance, food preparation and protection of this number of prisoners are to be provided with the coordination of the international coalition and Washington, Shawani said: Iraq is implementing a comprehensive program including vocational and technical training and intellectual reform in prisons to deal with takfiri ideas.
In response to a question about why Iraq was chosen to host the world's most dangerous terrorists, the Iraqi Minister of Justice said: firstly, there is trust in the Iraqi defense and security system, and secondly, there is the belief that Iraq is a united and influential country in the international coalition fighting ISIS, and finally, Iraq is considered a reliable military to keep these prisoners.
