PUK says will participate in new cabinet

<p style="text-align: left;">The politburo of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) met on Tuesday, November 27, and confirmed that the party's strategy regarding the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet is to participate in the cabinet.

&ldquo; The PUK will participate in the new government cabinet through real partnership, joint decision, and joint responsibility,&rdquo; the party said in a statement after the meeting.

Party officials are expected to reconvene on Saturday to continue its discussions, NRT reported.

It is now several weeks after the new parliament was sworn in, but formal negotiations between the parties over how to distribute cabinet posts have yet to begin.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the PUK, and the Gorran Movement are expected to form the new cabinet. The Kurdistan Islamic Group is also believed to be open to joining the government.

Gorran previously said that it is considering joining the government, but will only do so if the proposed policy program matches the one that they ran on during the election.

According to the official results, the KDP secured 45 seats, the PUK won 21, and Gorran got 12. If the three formed a government together, their 78 seats would more than form a supermajority in the 111-seat parliament.

However, the KDP has made it clear that power in the government would be distributed along majoritarian lines and not like in previous cabinets, where a "fifty-fifty," power sharing agreement too precedence.

The New Generation Movement and the Kurdistan Islamic Union have both said that they will seek to form a parliamentary opposition.
