He explained that Chamchamal and Sousse prisons are for general crimes, not terrorist cases; For this reason, ISIS members are kept in special terrorism prisons in central and southern Iraq.
The Minister of Justice of Iraq announced about the number of transferred prisoners: "Up to this moment, 5046 ISIS prisoners have been transferred from Syria to Iraq, and this number is expected to reach about 6,000."
He added that all these prisoners are tried under the supervision of the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq and by courts and specialized judicial boards.
Khaled Shawani also said that most of these prisoners have foreign citizenships and belong to nearly 60 different countries, and Iraq is in contact with the international coalition and the relevant countries in this regard, so that after the end of the judicial process, these countries will hand over their nationals.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Central Command of the US forces (CENTCOM) announced that a new process for the transfer of ISIS detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraq has begun; An action that is carried out with the aim of keeping them in safe places.
According to this statement, this process has started and the American forces have so far transferred 150 ISIS prisoners from a detention center in Hasaka, Syria to a safe place inside Iraq. The ultimate goal of this operation is to transfer about 7,000 arrested ISIS members from Syria to the prisons under the control of the Iraqi government.
